Senator Nancy Greene Raine took parliamentarians, community leaders and everyday cyclists on a ride around Ottawa this week to celebrate Bike Day on the Hill.
Afterward, a barbeque and open roundtable took place in the East Block courtyard so participants could discuss how best to create a national bike strategy. “Active transportation is an excellent way to increase overall physical activity of Canadians, and is especially important for youngsters,” said Senator Greene Raine, a champion alpine skier voted as Canada’s Female Athlete of the 20th Century. “Riding a bike to school builds physical activity into a child’s daily routine and provides a base for a lifelong love of cycling.” Other ideas focused on infrastructure, financial incentives and bike education.
But cycling isn’t all policy and politics. “Best of all, it’s fun!” exclaimed Senator Greene Raine.
